Result - Royal Household

Sun Sep 10th Grannies lose - somehow - by 150 runs

Match report

It was all going so well... Winning the toss we chose to field - what? bat? when we had a strong enough batting side to chase down any total? Tom Carr got an early wicket - an edge to the keeper falling over - and he and the remaining bowlers did an excellent job of containing some useful batsmen, aided by good catching. The 2 Sams, White and Pougatch, took 2 wickets each, for 42 and 36, off 9 and 7 overs respectively. Other Pougatch family members, Felix Tritton and Max Felgate, got one each. Mo Ahmad, our outstanding recent recruit, bowled as well as anyone - alternating fast/medium with big-turning offies -but without luck, making up for his lack of wickets however with 2 excellent pouches, matched by those of Sam White, Max and Tom. The Household innings ended when the heavens opened, in a way and to an extent not foretold by the Met Office, and an early tea was taken, a declaration following at 211 for 8 off 36.3.
Sad to relate, that was as good as it got. A combination of the rain spicing the wicket up and big strong bowlers being able to exploit it, together with a keeper bagging a quick 6 catches, did for us good and proper - oh, all those things plus Sam White, of whom much was expected, being unable to bat (having taken one on his hand travelling at a million mph). Our total, when totted up, came to no more than 61 - top scorer Scottie with 16. Freddie Cox looked good for 12, with 2 classy 4s. Mo hit his second, third and 4th balls for 4, but was out to his sixth, one of many unplayables (or so it looked from the boundary and, briefly, in the middle). Beyond question the pitch contributed materially, the umpire confirming that it turned into a mine-field. Obviously had the captain been Mystic Meg she would have chosen differently at the toss, and history would almost certainly have been re-written.....
Anyway it goes into the record books as a heavy defeat, but in so many other ways , most notably the wonderful turnout of Grannies family and friends - not all of them, only mostly, 'Pougatch's' - as huge a success as ever.
We are undoubtedly privileged to play at Frogmore. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. Always it is a treat, and once more we thank our hosts warmly for their hospitality.
