Match report

A disappointingly small (4) but high quality (!) Grannies contingent (Richard Snowden, Andy Medhurst, Tom Hoskyns and Nick Noble (c)) arrived on a glorious autumn morning at one of the world's finest golf courses - Rye Old Course. After charitably letting the "B" match (Old Etonians v Wykehamists) tee off first, Tom 'fessed up to being a single-figure handicapper and immediately demonstrated why, taking him and his foursomes partner Nick (El Bandito) to four up after four holes.

Richard and Andy finally troubled the scorers with a half at the fifth and hung in until Richard pitched up from 100 yards to one foot at the ninth to take the match to the turn three down.

Andy then rifled an approach to claim the 10th and when Tom uncharacteristically drove into the water at the 11th, suddenly the deficit was down to one. The pairs traded shots until the 16th when Richard and Andy won the hole to level the match.

But the drama was not over, because Nick holed a long range put at the 17th to tee off at the last dormie one. Things looked good for him and Tom until Richard struck another pitch from the distant rough to a few yards and Andy putted stone dead. That left Nick needing to hole a testing put to halve the hole and win the match. The ball crept wide and a very enjoyable match was halved - a fair result.

There was much to talk about over Harveys, Chateau Beaumont and Rye GC's famous lunch, before the entire team posed for a photo on the sunlit terrace. We bade farewell and thanks to the staff at Rye for a memorable day, with promises to try to increase numbers again for next year.
