Result - Shopwyke Strollers

Sat Jun 21st Grannies lost by 5 wickets

Match report

Grannies: all out 153
Shopwyke Strollers: 155-5

A new fixture for the Grannies produced a good, competitive game played in the right spirit.

After overnight rain, the Grannies were put into bat in testing, overcast conditions. Several batsmen, including Ed Warner and Charlie Gammell, made good starts and looked set for long stays at the crease but were undone by a combination of solid bowling and the deadly Stonegate slope. Luckily for the Grannies, Ed Gardiner-Hill saved their blushes as he pummelled the Shopwyke attack for a quickfire (what else) 70. However wickets continued to tumble and the Grannies were all out for 153, a good 40 runs short of a competitive total.

In the field the Grannies did their best to defend this small total, with Paul Knight (3-25) bowling a great spell of left arm swing and ripping through the top order. James Sibree bowled with good pace and was unfortunate to finish wicketless. Charlie Gammell claimed a couple of scalps during an impressive spell of probing off spin while candidate Tom Sibree held his own with some tidy medium pace. While the Grannies did take wickets, the scoreboard ticked over at a decent pace and the Shopwyke Strollers reached the target with just under 10 overs of the game remaining.

Huge thanks must go to Mark Beatty for all his hard work in getting the ground ready after a week of heavy rain.
