Result - The Griffin Inn

Sat Jul 12th Grannies win by 5 wickets

Match report

Order is restored with The Griffin back to serving Harveys as tipple of choice, no sign of the organic lager of last year.

Ignoring Robin Smith's advice, lapsed Granny James Pullan, won the toss and The Griffin inserted themselves at Cumnor House on the new U-11 pitch. Only finished this year, it is a distinct improvement on the old track as it is flat. It is also prone to dry out over the afternoon, but The Griffin were not aware of this in their haste to get the pads on.

Pullan J, succumbed early to his nemesis, Staniforth J and walked following the quietest of outside edges through to Adrian West doing a passable impression of a keeper. From there The Griffin were steady but had trouble scoring, either due to a slowish wicket or more likely to some excellent Grannies fielding. The Griffin managed to accelerate their run rate towards the end and declared at tea on 179 for 7.

15 year old Rob Noble bowled 11 overs of well controlled pace for only 33 and was unlucky not to take a wicket. Stan bowled 9 overs at 33/1, Paul Knight 9 overs 33/3, Simon Leefe 4 overs 22/1 and Matt Webster 6 overs 31/2.

After tea the Grannies opened with Andy Medhurst and Adrian West against a steady medium paced attack. Meddy was just getting settled when he was bowled for --, to be replaced by Paul 'the ringer' Knight.

Westy rode his luck in working out the pace of the wicket but once settled he hit the ball to all parts of the ground, and surrounding rough. He quickly moved to 51 before being bowled by a late inswinger.

Match info

The best pub food in Sussex followed by one of the best tracks in Sussex. Things were slipping last year when they served us organic lager rather than Harveys and then put nearly 300 runs on the board in about ten minutes. To say that we are out for revenge would be optimistic, we can but try.
We meet at about 12.30 for lunch in the Griffin Inn, which is in the middle of Fletching. This is a couple of miles further south from Cumnor House on the same road then a turning to the left signposted Fletching.
