Result - Odiham & Greywell

Sat Sep 11th Match Drawn

Match report

Fears that we couldn't match last year's tied game were quickly dispelled on a surprisingly sunny afternoon in Hampshire. The Captain won the toss and cunningly inserted the opposition when only 8 Grannies had landed "on site". Stanners performed like the trusty steed that he is (3/54). At the younger end of the spectrum Billy bowled well till the sulky teenager refused to bowl up hill into the wind, while Jamie Sibree applied further pressure (3/47) after he unconventionally pitched up 15 overs into the game astonished that it wasn't in fact a 20 minute drive from Tunbridge Wells...By this time Odiham's number 3 was getting the measure of some of the more wayward deliveries. Having being dropped at slip on 6 by Nick "it's a long way down there" Yeates, he bludgeoned his way to a modest 138* out of 220/6 declared. In reply things didn't start so well with 4 of the top 5 mustering a paltry 5 runs between them. Thankfuly Scottie, Billy, Adam Hill & the TimeLord Sibree added some respectability to the score. As it turned out this was a mere ordeuvre for main dish to come....enter Jerry Wynne dressed like a cross between the man from Delmonte & Andy Murray (I must have missed the email about the wearing of adidas tennis tops) & the redoubtable Staniforth. This last wicket stand of 58, which ultimately lead us to a not very well deserved draw, saw 2 contrasting styles of biff and block. Stanners finished on 45* not out (jug avoidance ?) & Jerry on 10*, with the Grannies 34 runs shy of the target.

Match info

An end of season Grannies favourite...we've had mixed results against Odiham and Greywell which rather depends on whether they field a team of youth and grey hair or a team including a sprinkling of their 1st team. Always enjoyed by the Grannies the mixture of a good pitch, welcoming oppo plus a bar make this an excellent way to see off the season.

Oh...and I can guarantee sunshine - but only because I'm in Cairo (said Jim)
