Match report

The finale to the 2009 season was played in overcast conditions, in the most picturesque of settings, against a youthful and hospitable Leigh side. The Grannies were inserted after losing the toss and found themselves 22-0 after just one over. The good start continued as The Grannies posted an opening stand of 128 with Gwilym Thomas batting beautifuly before departing, caught on the boundary, for 67. Ashley Butterworth then contributed a sprightly 17 before Eddie Daffarn was joined at the crease by Will Finn. Will took to the Leigh bowling with some gusto and had made a whirlwind 57 not out as The Grannies declared at tea for 256-2. Eddie Daffarn made 63 not out and, on a lighting outfield, extras had contributed over 50 hefty runs to the total.
After a most sumptuous tea, Leigh's openers set about chasing The Grannies sizeable total but were held back by some accurate bowling. Justin Grove (on loan from The HAC and standing in for Julian Graham)and Oli Walden gave little away until both had to be replaced prematurely because of injuries. Gwilym Thomas and Adam Newton continued to exert pressure and gave The Grannies a scent of victory with a spell of bowling that produced 5 wickets between them. Gwilym finished with figures of 11-4-22-3 and Adam 8-0-36-2.
However, Leigh's numbers 8 and 9 dug in and frustrated The Grannies scoring 48 and 27 respectively. With six wickets down and 9 overs remaining the match was still there to be won by The Grannies. Despite the best efforts of Jerry Wynne and Dave Boa (who took two further Leigh wickets and ended up with figures of 5-1-25-2)Leigh managed to reach 187-8 before stumps were drawn for the last time on this year's Grannie season.
