Result - Goodwood C. C.

Sun Jun 10th The Grannies lose by 7 wickets

Match report

At a Goodwood undergoing the annual transformation in readiness to host The Festival of Speed, the Grannies were invited to bat in the heat but were slow off the line, restricted by accurate bowling from the Goodwood openers, followed by accurate bowling from the Goodwood change bowlers. As the afternoon wore on, various Grannies' batsmen contributed valuable runs, but none managed to entirely stamp their authority on the game. Nigel Draffan and Simon Clarke came closest to doing so, scoring 30 apiece, but it wasn't until Andy Benson and Jon Staniforth pushed the metaphorical accelerator pedal to the floor, Andy making a pugnacious unbeaten 19 and Stanners an entertaining 22, that The Grannies reached the respectability of 172-9 and the captain thought it suitable to declare.

With only 34 overs (as it turned out) to dismiss the Goodwood team, The Grannies needed early wickets, but unfortunately the edges that came did not go to hand. John Rayer trapped the Goodwood No.1 lbw to break the lucky, but effective, opening partnership, and he then held a good catch in the covers (after emitting an expletive when he realised that the ball was coming to him!) off the bowling of Billy Maisey to send the No.2 on his way back, but there followed a good partnership between Nos.3 and 4 that managed to negate the excellent spin bowling of Nick Watson, in particular.

Needing 120 from the last 20 overs, Goodwood continued to keep their noses in front of the required rate, and despite the Match Manager's caught and bowled dismissal of Goodwood's half-centurion, the home side made it to the final over needing 1 to win, with 7 wickets in hand. They duly managed to scamper a leg-bye from the 4th ball, deservedly clinching victory on this occasion.

What else can one say? It was an enjoyable game, but unfortunately this was just a day when The Grannies were never quite at the races...
